Dr Salman Shahzad, PhD

Salman Shahzad has been working as a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and working as an Associate Professor in the Institute of Clinical Psychology at the University of Karachi. He is currently leading as Clinical Incharge, and Incharge “Research and Training Unit for prevention and treatment of SUD” at the Institute of Clinical Psychology (ICP). He has completed his Fulbright Hubert Humphrey Fellowship from Virginia Commonwealth University, USA. Since 2002, he is working in the field of substance use prevention and treatment.  His principal areas of research are early detection and risk for mental health (trauma & suicide) substance use, epidemiology and psycho-social risk factors of substance use (i.e., tobacco, opioids, alcohol & marijuana & amphetamine), coping skills, neurocognitive functioning, and personality characteristics, impulsivity and relapse prevention for substance use in children, adolescents and young adults, and designing and implementing evidence-based interventions including, cognitive-behavioral, mindfulness, therapeutic parenting, emotion regulation and trauma-related interventions for children, adolescents and vulnerable group of people. As a researcher, he published numerous research papers in well-reputed scientific journals both national and international level and supervised numbers of postgraduate scholars in clinical psychology and concentrated in Substance use prevention and treatment (6 PhDs & 8 MS), and currently, more than 18 scholars are working in his research lab in the same area. He has designed programs that include a wellness program for staff, S-SBIRT-Y, Bullying Prevention and Comprehensive Treatment Programs for inpatients treatment services, counseling skills, and therapeutic parenting. As part of my services, he designed Post Graduate Diploma in Addiction Sciences (PMDAS) which was initially endorsed by foreign experts and implemented at ICP which is the first-ever specialized diploma course implemented in Pakistan. He has already replicated training courses that he attended as a global master trainer in the treatment and prevention of substance use. As part of his community services since 2002, he is working with women, children, and adolescents with substance use disorders. These children and adolescents have been living on the street and now they are receiving treatment for their substance use problems and trauma-related issues. Being an International trainer he served as a resource person in numerous national and international training courses related to substance use treatment and prevention. In addition to this, as part of his community services, he delivers counseling and psychotherapy in community-based organizations, developing treatment protocols, and the staff improving their treatment services. Dr. Salman’s strength and track record lie in building and growing programs, leveraging through collaboration, inspiring others to work in teams, a passion for excellence, strong leadership skills, proven administrative experience, strategic planning, executing transformational culture change, and the ability to create an atmosphere that nurtures, values, and celebrates diversity.
