April Student Membership Update

We know that there are many of our website visitors who might be interested in pursuing further study, are seeking funding for a research idea they have or would like to connect with other researchers and professionals. 

We have found three PhD opportunities that we think might be interesting and some events and networks that could be beneficial for someone at any stage of their research journey.

PhD Opportunities

Psychology

The University of Surrey has open studentship offers in the Psychology faculty which is linked to the Medical Research Council, the Social Research Council, in addition to EU and UK government departments. 

Research themes include: 

  • Cognitive neuroscience
  • Cognition and creativity
  • Social and personality psychology
  • Developmental psychology
  • Health psychology
  • Occupational psychology
  • Environmental psychology

Addictions

Kings College in London offers a PhD programme in Addictions. Offering one of Europe's most renowned research centres, the National Addiction Centre which has been developing research for over 40 years. 

Research themes include:

  • Development and evaluation of new treatments for alcohol
  • Smoking and drug problems
  • Studies seeking to understand the underlying psychological and biological bases and change processes of addictive behaviours
  • Policy-driven and workforce development projects
  • Treatment trials

Neuroscience

The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona has been offering a PhD in Neuroscience since 1986. The programme is linked to, Vall d'Hebron University Hospital Research Institute (VHIR), Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau Research Institute (IR-Sant Pau), and Networked Research Centre for Neurodegenerative Diseases (CIBERNED).

Research themes include: 

  • Genetic bases of phenotypes related to mental and neurological illnesses
  • Receptor regulation in chronic pain
  • Neurobiology of stress and its involvement in drug addiction and other psychiatric pathologies. Associated neuropharmacological mechanisms
  • Neurosteroids, brain development and effects on behaviour

Events

Liverpool John Moores University will host a PhD symposium on 4th July 2018. The conference is free to attend and will focus on "Improving and Understanding Health".

Topics including: Preparing for viva, academic writing, undertaking research with vulnerable adults, and undertaking research with children will all be available.

Scholarships

The Tantalum Student Aid Grant is aimed at those looking for extra funding to cover attendance at conferences and travel expenses. Supporting researchers in exploring medical technology projects, up to 10,000 USD can be awarded annually. 

The funding is offered by X-Medics Scandinavia, a supplier of equipment used to improve x-ray radio-opacity in implant application.
