And the Winner Is….

To drink alcohol at sporting events has become the social norm. A new study conducted collaboratively by Eastern Health and Turning Point Alcohol and Drugs Centre has discovered that drunkenness and related harm in Australia tend to reach peak levels on the days of, and in those leading up to, major sports events. The investigation is based on data collected from A&E departments across the country, as well as Australian hospital and police records. It highlights the impact of drinking culture on the emergency services, their resource allocation and also provides guidance for educational programmes targeting alcohol abuse.
