Receptivity to Tobacco Ads Linked to Smoking Susceptibility Among Youth

There is a strong link between receptivity to tobacco product advertisements and susceptibility to smoking cigarettes later in life, according to new research published in the journal Pediatrics. Put simply, the study suggests that the more an adolescent likes a tobacco ad, the more likely he/she is to try smoking in the future.

Adding clarification on the results, the lead author comments: 'Previous studies have linked receptivity to cigarette advertising with susceptibility to smoking cigarettes among youth. What we're seeing in this study is that even being receptive to marketing of non-cigarette tobacco products, including e-cigarettes, is associated with susceptibility to smoke cigarettes.'

Specifically, the study found that around 50% of 14- to 17-year-olds were receptive to tobacco advertisements of any kind.
