Psychiatrist - Addiction

The Addiction Psychiatrist at the Durham VA Health Care System provides a full range of therapeutic interventions to units/programs including diagnostic assessment, medication evaluation and management, suicide risk assessments, crisis intervention, and overall care of patients with psychiatric disorders, including depression, anxiety, psychosis, PTSD, substance abuse, and other psychiatric disorders in various clinical settings including the outpatient, inpatient, ED, and hospital ward settings.

  • Provides outpatient psychiatric management for Veterans in the Substance Use Disorders (SUD) Clinic, including diagnostic evaluation; management of general psychiatric medications; medication-assisted treatment of substance use disorders (alcohol, opioids, tobacco, etc.), consistent with VHA, SAMHSA, and other relevant guidelines; and psychotherapy as clinically appropriate.
  • Provides diagnostic evaluation in complex cases that may involve SUD, e.g., co-occurring SUD and other mental disorders, distinguishing substance-induced vs. primary mental disorders, and co-occurring chronic pain and possible opioid use disorder.
  • Refers patients for primary and specialty medical care as appropriate.
  • Collaborates and contributes effectively as a member of the SUD Clinic multidisciplinary team.
  • Provides in-service education for the SUD Clinic team.
  • Maintains collegial, collaborative professional relationships with physicians in all clinical services in the Health System, including Psychiatry, Medicine, Ambulatory Care, Surgery, Anesthesiology, and Rehabilitation Medicine, etc., as warranted for excellent patient care.

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday; 7:45AM to 4:30PM
