SAMHSA recently introduced the 4 E’s as a “Modern and Comprehensive Prevention System” to support the work of prevention providers in States and communities.
The 4 E’s: Early Action, Easy Access, Equitable Opportunities and Effective Delivery, provide a vital system for ensuring that prevention efforts are planned and implemented in an equitable and effective manner.
Objective: To help adults manage risks relating to adolescent substance use in line with evidence-based prevention principles.
The May 2023 Preventive Medicine Grand Rounds (PMGR) features Recovery Kentucky, a social model program that provides housing and recovery services for rural Kentuckians dealing with substance use disorder. The program is led by the Kentucky Housing Corporation (KHC), the state Department of Corrections, and the state Department for Local Government.

Presented by Richard Rawson, PhD, Emeritus Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Science, UCLA School of Medicine and a Research Professor at the University of Vermont, this presentation provided an overview of the current knowledge on the problem of stimulant (cocaine and methamphetamine) use in the US.
Cocaine is the hydrochloride salt produced from the leaves of the coca plant. Powder cocaine is typically snorted and less frequently injected. Crack is a smokable form of cocaine and is manufactured from cocaine hydrochloride.
Cocaine is known for its immediate effects and association with problematic patterns of drug use.
Cocaine is an addictive stimulant drug that originates from the leaves of the coca plant, which is indigenous to South America. The drug's effects include heightened alertness, attention, and energy, as well as feelings of euphoria and confidence. However, these effects come at a high cost, as cocaine use can lead to a range of negative health and social consequences.
Objective: To better understand current developments in the treatment of stimulant use.
Background: Stimulant drugs are second only to cannabis as the most widely used class of illicit drug globally, accounting for 68 million past-year consumers.
The N‑SUMHSS is a voluntary annual survey of all active substance use and mental health facilities in the United States, its territories, and D.C. The annual report presents findings on the general profile of substance use and mental health facilities, use of pharmacotherapies/medications, language assistance provided, and suicide prevention services.

This webinar looked at the contexts of young offenders’ alcohol and other drug use and the implications for harm reduction strategies.
The importance of multi-level interventions that move beyond ‘victim blaming’ and ‘individual responsibility’ was discussed and the importance of including consumer perspectives in framing AoD discourses more broadly was explored.
