ISSUP Chile

Welcome to ISSUP Chile

Since 2018, we are part of the International Society of Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP) which is an organization to support the development of a professional prevention, treatment and recovery network. It serves as a focal point for information concerning the drug demand reduction field.

ISSUP Chile operates as the National Chapter of this Society. Because the greatest needs of the Chilean population, in the area of substance use and drug demand reduction generally, are found in the fields of social integration, prevention and treatment, the overall objective is to promote practices based on evidence, and that are high quality and ethical. The aim is to build networks within the broad field of drug demand reduction and to build a professional workforce that can operate and communicate effectively.

ISSUP Chile was established under the auspices of the Chilean Society of Neurology, Psychiatry, and Neurosurgery (SONEPSYN), which served as the host organization. SONEPSYN is a non-profit scientific society founded in 1932, with legal status and approved bylaws since 1952. Its objectives focus on the medical specialties of its target groups, which are to be studied, enhanced, and disseminated. The society also supports other related disciplines in which professionals can receive assistance for their professional development.

Currently, the host organization is the Universidad de La Frontera (UFRO). UFRO is a public Chilean university located in the city of Temuco, the capital of the Araucanía Region, with campuses in the cities of Angol and Pucón. It is a major center for scientific production and postgraduate education in Temuco.

ISSUP Chile aims to:

  • Represent the national communities of substance use prevention, treatment and recovery professionals and aspiring professionals.
  • Develop and deliver knowledge systems for evidence-based prevention, treatment and recovery.
  • Offer communications and networking opportunities that will take place online and at ISSUP Chile events.
  • Promote and support the international community of drug demand reduction professionals and aspiring professionals to ensure effective policy and practice in this field.
