Medication-Assisted Treatment combines medications with counselling and behavioural therapies to treat substance use disorders. While the term “MAT” is widely used, many experts recommend replacing it with “medications for addiction treatment” or “addiction pharmacotherapy”, as the term “assisted” can undervalue the central role of medications in treatment. Medications such as methadone, buprenorphine, and naltrexone have been shown to be effective with or without additional psychosocial interventions.
