WHO Statement: Tobacco Use and COVID-19

Tobacco smoking is a known risk factor for many respiratory difficulties. A review of studies by public health experts convened by WHO on 29 April 2020 found that smokers are more likely to develop severe disease with COVID-19, compared to non-smokers.

Following the review, the WHO has released a statement that explains the elevated risk.

This report and infographic, published by the Canadian Centre for Substance Use and Addiction, summarises mechanisms through which COVID-19, alcohol and cannabis use may influence one another reciprocally.

COVID-19 may influence alcohol and cannabis use through stress and anxiety, loneliness and boredom, and changes in daily routine. Using alcohol and cannabis may have an impact on the immune system, which may have an impact on people infected with COVID-19. Guidance for reducing these risks is also presented.

Alcohol has a negative impact on our immune systems ability to function, leading to greater susceptibility to certain diseases.

It is particularly important that, during this pandemic, we protect our immune system in order to give ourselves the best chance at overcoming the virus if we happen to catch it.

This one-page poster published, by the Canadian Centre of Substance Use and Addiction, highlights four important things currently known about the effects of alcohol on the immune system. The infographic also provides practical tips to reduce the harms of alcohol.
