This webinar presented the latest global and regional trends in the use of opioid analgesics and explore issues related to availability.

Around the world the consumption of opioid analgesics has been increasing, yet millions of people still die in pain every year, including children, mostly in poor countries, but also in rural areas in developed countries.

Observing the trends in use of these medications is relevant to determine which medicines are being used and if the international market is distributing mostly newer and less affordable formulations, to determine any changes in the...

Background

Beginning in the 1990s, non-medical use of prescription opioids (POs) became a major public health crisis. In response to rising rates of opioid dependence and fatal poisonings, measures were instituted to decrease the prescription, diversion, and non-medical use of POs including prescription drug monitoring programs (PDMPs), pain clinic laws, prescription duration limits, disciplining doctors who prescribed an excessive number of POs, and the advent of abuse deterrent formulations of POs. This paper explores the unintended effects of these policies in the descriptions of why...

Background

Opioid overdose remains a public health crisis in diverse communities. Between 2019 and 2020, there was an almost 40% increase in drug fatalities primarily due to opioid analogues of both stimulants and opioids. Medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD; e.g., buprenorphine) are effective, evidence-based treatments that can be delivered in office-based primary care settings. We investigated disparities in the proportion of national prescribers who have obtained a waiver issued to prescribe MOUD by demographic characteristics.
