The three-year EU-funded project — launched by the EMCDDA in January 2019 — supports national and regional readiness in the ENP area to identify and respond to drug-related health and security threats.
The EU Drug Markets Report 2019 is the third comprehensive overview of illicit drug markets in the European Union by the EMCDDA and Europol.
The analysis presented in the report examines topics such as the links between drugs and other crimes, the licit economy and society more generally as well as the processes and players involved in the trade, from production and trafficking to distribution.
Taking an evidence-based approach, the report reviews the markets for heroin, cocaine, cannabis, amphetamine, methamphetamine, MDMA and new psychoactive substances.
The aim of the ASAP training project is to build effective drug prevention results across Europe, based on prevention systems analysis and widespread professional training.

The link between drugs, alcohol and mental health is well established. As counsellors many of us have seen clients dependent on substances or even behaviours. But how do we work with these issues safely in private practice or a general...
The physical and psychological harm caused by heavy alcohol consumption to the individual drinking is often clear. What is often less obvious, is the damage an individuals alcohol consumption can have to the people around them.
A recent study has examined the impact of parental drinking on children.
A total of 997 parents and their children completed the surveys that asked questions about levels of parent alcohol consumption, why they were choosing to drink, and the children's experience of their parents drinking.
From the study they found that three-fifths of the 997 parents surveyed said...
Coombes, H., Cooper, R.J. Staff perceptions of prescription and over-the-counter drug dependence services in England: a qualitative study. Addict Sci Clin Pract 14, 41 (2019) doi:10.1186/s13722-019-0170-4
Abstract
Background
Dependence to prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs represents an increasing public health and clinical problem both in England and internationally. However, relatively little is known about those affected, particularly in relation to their management at drug dependence treatment centres. This study aimed to explore the views and experiences of health care professionals (HCPs) working in formal drug treatment services in relation to supporting clients with prescription and OTC drug dependence.
Methods
An exploratory, qualitative design was used involving semi...
"Prevention methods using shock tactics are proven to be ineffective. Nevertheless, strategies based on predominantly providing information about the dangers of substance use are widespread in Europe. The European Society for Prevention Research (EUSPR) is concerned about those so-called prevention strategies. It calls on decisionmakers, influencers and policymakers to use scientific proof of effectiveness as a criterion for exposing our youth to prevention methods and not to spend public money on rather commercial offers, since there are better and less expensive alternatives."
Ireland has introduced new legislation to reduce child exposure to alcohol advertisements and products.
Alcohol advertising in or on public transport, at public transport stations, and within 200 metres of a school, creche, or local authority playground will be prohibited.
Cinemas will be banned from advertising alcohol except around films with an 18 age classification.
All children’s clothing that promotes alcohol will also be discontinued.
Health Minister Simon Harris said:
“Studies report consistently that exposure to alcohol advertising is associated with an increased likelihood...
The Welsh Government will introduce a minimum unit price for alcohol of 50p from 2 March 2020, with regulations today being approved by the National Assembly for Wales.
The new law supports the Welsh Government’s work to address harmful drinking by tackling the availability and affordability of cheap, strong alcohol, which is part of wider efforts to improve and protect the health of the population of Wales.
Researchers have suggested that the proposed changes would:
result in 66 fewer deaths and 1,281 fewer hospital admissions in Wales per year
Despite efforts to reduce concerning levels of alcohol consumption in Europe through adopting the WHO European Action Plan on Alcohol (EAPA), the region continues to have the highest prevalence of drinkers, heavy episodic drinking, alcohol consumption per capita, and the lowest proportion of abstainers, compared with other regions around the world.
Efforts to introduce policies that prevent and control non-communicable diseases are frequently hampered by trade agreements, conflicting economic interests, or the challenges of controlling online advertising and sales.
The National Health Service has been closely following the smoking, drinking and drug use trends amongst young people in England.
The series of surveys began in 1982. The most recent 2018 survey questioned 13,664 year 7 to 11 pupils, mostly aged 11 to 15, from 193 schools across England, between September 2018 and February 2019.
The Health Research Board National Drugs Library has published a new factsheet that contains information on treatment, prevalence and mortality in Ireland.
The factsheet covers:

the prevalence of smoking in Ireland
the number of people who attempted to quit smoking

The aim of the report is to provide reliable and detailed evidence of the drug situation in Europes so that practice and new policies can be informed by sound research.
By following trends, conclusions can be drawn and predictions made about how the drug situation might unfold in the future.
