Drug and Alcohol Findings

HOW MANY DRINKERS SHOULD BE IN TREATMENT?

What proportion of England’s problem drinkers are in treatment, how far does that fall short of the number who *should* be – and how do we judge ‘should’? Depending on where you draw the line, performance ranges from abysmal to excellent. Asks whether austerity-driven public service funding cuts have obstructed routes into treatment, decreasing the extent to which treatment is meeting the needs of the alcohol-dependent population.

In the past, researchers have monitored how major events have influenced peoples drinking behaviour, both during and post-crisis. Although behaviour scientists around the world are carrying out similar analysis, there are several factors that make this situation unique. These include the...

THE ‘COMMON FACTORS’ AT THE HEART OF TREATMENT

The first cell in row two of the Alcohol Treatment Matrix initiates our investigation of treatment as opposed to brief interventions, discussing seminal and key research relevant across different treatment modalities. It focuses on the ‘common factors’ often sidelined as components of the placebo effect, but which are actually active ingredients at least as important as the particular therapy. Starts with a “frankly inspiring series of studies from the 1950s”, highlights the multi-million dollar US Project MATCH trial, and develops evidence...

Context is that Britain’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) insists commissioners and managers “must” generate a system which provides the training, resources and time needed for routine brief intervention. Find out what happened when that was tried in Scotland, and develop evidence-informed understanding of four key issues:
