An introduction to Universal Curricula

The Universal Prevention, Treatment and Recovery Curriculum  provide training programmes for those wishing to develop their professional knowledge, skills and competence in addressing substance use prevention and delivering treatment services to individuals and their families.

UPC, UTC and URC have been developed by teams of international experts in the field. The materials are written, piloted and are being used for training by prevention and addiction professionals in the field, particularly in Southeast Asia, Africa and South America. Both curricula undergo a regular review and update every 2-3 years to ensure that they continue to reflect the scientific evidence base for work in prevention and treatment. Additional courses are regularly added to reflect the changing needs of the workforce.

The UC are endorsed by or are of special interest to major international organizations, including the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Organization of American States (OAS/CICAD), the European Drug Monitoring Centre(EMCDDA) and the World Health OrganizationColombo Plan and the Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) have been the major financial providers for the development of these curricula.

UC have been developed on evidence-based principles. They are written in response to the demand for up-to-date and well-researched training programmes in the fields of prevention and treatment. Both the curricula provide professional development training material to cover the breadth of issues within the prevention, treatment and recovery support fields.
