The focus of this seminar is on prescription smoking cessation pharmacotherapies, which include nicotine replacement therapy patches, varenicline and bupropion.
Dr Alys Havard presents data on the number of Australian women who use these medicines during pregnancy, and their findings regarding the risk of adverse birth outcomes associated with the use of each of these medicines during pregnancy.
She will also show how nicotine replacement therapy patches and varenicline compare in terms of effectiveness when used during pregnancy. We addressed these research questions using linked...
This presentation explored some of the alternative treatments for smoking cessation.
In 2005 the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence commissioned a review of Non-NHS treatments for smoking cessation. This included the use of cytisine, rapid smoking, Allen Carr’s Easyway to quit smoking, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, Nicobloc and Nicobrevin. Over 15 years later, has the evidence changed? This presentation summarises the current data on some of these alternative treatments.

The American University of Beirut (AUB), with an affiliated tertiary medical center, developed one of the first smoking-cessation programs in the country in 2015 in response to an identified need within the university community. The program offers counseling to promote learning behavior modification and provides nicotine replacement therapy (NRT), including nicotine gum and patch.
A detailed description of the methods, results and conclusion of the program implementation is explained in the report.
Tobacco use amongst the youth is a growing prevalent issue, with traditional tobacco products, such as the narguileh, being the main culprit. One survey indicated that the rise in tobacco use, through narguileh smoking amongst teenagers is increasing, due to its widespread acceptance within families and in society. This report, written in partnership with Cancer Research UK, examines the performance of stop smoking services in England during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic.
Key Points
The proportion of local authorities commissioning a specialist stop smoking service has risen year-on-year from 65% in 2018 and 69% in 2019 to 77% in 2020.
The COVID-19 pandemic forced local authorities to reconfigure their stop smoking services at an unprecedented speed. They adapted quickly and many found that smokers welcomed remote methods of engagement such as telephone consultations.
“Commit to Quit” will help create healthier environments that are conducive to quitting tobacco by advocating for strong tobacco cessation policies; increasing access to cessation services; raising awareness of tobacco industry tactics, and empowering tobacco users to make successful quit attempts...

Turner, S., Mackay, D., Dick, S., Semple, S., & Pell, J. P. (2020). Associations between a smoke-free homes intervention and childhood admissions to hospital in Scotland: an interrupted time-series analysis of whole-population data. The Lancet Public Health, 5(9), e493-e500.
When an individual smokes a cigarette (or roll-up, pipe or cigar), most of the smoke doesn't go into their lungs, it goes into the air around them where anyone nearby can breathe it in. This is known as second-hand smoke.
Infants and children are particularly vulnerable to the negative impact of smoke.
The WHO Framework on Tobacco Control Article 8 concerns the protection from exposure to tobacco smoke. Although there has been a great effort in many countries to make public places smoke free, children and young people are still regularly exposed to second-hand smoke in their homes.

Abdel-Hady, D., & El-Gilany, A. H. (2020). Tobacco use and its associated factors among older people: a community-based study in Egypt. Eastern Mediterranean Health Journal, 26(1), 68-74.
Tobacco use is the primary risk factor common to the four main groups of non-communicable diseases— cardiovascular disease, cancer, chronic lung disease and diabetes (NCD Alliance).
Figures gathered from the Egypt Global Adult Tobacco Survey (2009) show that Egypt is listed as one of the top ten per capita consumers of tobacco.
Despite being particularly vulnerable to damage from tobacco use, there is a particularly high prevalence of smoking amongst older adults in Egypt.
The aim of this study was to investigate how many older adults in Egypt use tobacco in its different forms.

Tobacco smoking is a known risk factor for many respiratory difficulties. A review of studies by public health experts convened by WHO on 29 April 2020 found that smokers are more likely to develop severe disease with COVID-19, compared to non-smokers.
Following the review, the WHO has released a statement that explains the elevated risk.
The article outlines potential smoking reduction and cessasion intervention programmes.
The coronavirus pandemic has presented a new challenge for public health services around the world.
Although scientists are working tirelessly to comprehend more about the virus, there are still many unanswered questions.
In a recent interview, Dr. Nora Volkow, who heads the National Institute on Drug Abuse, describes factors that may increase the risk of coronavirus causing greater harm to the infected individual.
In response to the tobacco and related industries’ systematic, aggressive and sustained tactics to attract a new generation of tobacco users, World No Tobacco Day 2020 will provide a counter-marketing campaign and empower young people to...
