Binge drinking refers to the consumption of a large amount of alcohol within a short period, typically leading to acute intoxication.
According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), binge drinking occurs when alcohol consumption results in a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of 0.08 or higher, usually after 4 or more drinks for women and 5 or more drinks for men within about two hours.
According to the World Health Organisation (WHO) ICD-11 6C40.3, alcohol intoxication is a transient condition that occurs during or shortly after drinking and is characterised by disturbances in consciousness, cognition, perception, affect, behaviour, and coordination. The severity of symptoms depends on the amount of alcohol consumed and may include impaired judgment, unsteady movement, slurred speech, and aggressive or risky behaviour
