12-Step Program

A 12-Step Program is a mutual support and fellowship group designed to help individuals recover from addiction or other compulsive behaviours. The approach emphasises personal accountability, spiritual growth, and peer support.

The first 12-Step Program, Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), was founded in 1935. Since then, many similar groups have emerged, such as Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Cocaine Anonymous (CA). While not a formal treatment method, participation can complement therapy by offering community and structure.

Key principles include:

  • Admitting a lack of control over addiction.

  • Placing trust in a higher power or greater purpose.

  • Making amends for past behaviours.

  • Supporting others in recovery.

This model has been adapted globally to address a wide range of issues, including drug dependence, gambling, and co-dependency.
