MANAGEMENT’S INFLUENCE ON ALCOHOL SCREENING AND BRIEF INTERVENTION

Key studies on management’s influence on the delivery and effectiveness of screening and brief intervention for risky drinking. ‘Bite’ commentary starts with UK guidance which insists managers “must” support this work, highlights the study which presaged a shift from universal to selective screening, and develops evidence-informed understanding of four important issues:
- Whether to insist on these procedures or let clinicians and patients decide their own priorities
- The degree to which management is the key to ensuring...

Is Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment (SBIRT) Effective for Addressing Substance Use among Adolescents?

Inman, D., El-Mallakh, P., Jensen, L., Ossege, J., & Scott, L. (2020). Addressing Substance Use in Adolescents: Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment. The Journal for Nurse Practitioners, 16(1), 69-73.

Nicotine, alcohol and marijuana are the most widely used substances among adolescents. These substances, however, can have serious negative consequences for brain development, making substance use among adolescents a major public health issue.

New research, published in The Journal for Nurse Practitioners, looks at how practice nurses in primary care settings can address the issue of substance use among adolescents with evidence-based interventions.

Identifying and treating substance use in adolescence can reduce long term harm and risk of later life dependency.

The article describes the...

How Can We Change Drinking Behaviours among ‘Baby Boomers’?

Shared by Livia - 18 February 2020
Format
News

The term ‘baby boomer’ refers to those born during 1946-1964. In the UK, they account for around 25% of the population.

Studies have found that baby boomers indulge in more dangerous drinking behaviour than younger generations. For example, between 1992-2006, alcohol consumption among baby boomers (aged 45-64) increased by 85%, compared to 50% for over 65s and 24% for those aged 16-24.

Similar studies report increased alcohol-related deaths and a higher prevalence of alcohol-related hospital admittances among baby bombers. Their drug usage between 1993-2007 has also risen, and there is...

Invitation to Tender: Low and No Alcohol Drinks

Shared by Livia - 17 February 2020
Format
News

Alcohol Change UK is commissioning a literature and policy review about low-alcohol and alcohol-free drinks.

Low-alcohol and alcohol-free drinks appear to be gaining market share, attention within the drinks industry, public awareness and popularity, and political focus.

There is, however, next to no evidence about the effect they have on drinkers and the population as a whole.

Alcohol Change UK, therefore, wish to commission a literature and policy review to start to fill the evidence gap.

Deadline Monday 2 March 2020.

Minimum Unit Pricing for Alcohol Introduced in Wales

Shared by Livia - 17 February 2020
Format
News

From the 2nd of March, Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP) for alcohol will come into effect in Wales.

The policy, which has shown positive outcomes in Scotland, aims to tackle alcohol-related harm and death.

MUP is designed to reduce the amount of low cost, high strength products.

Although the law enabling the Welsh Government to set a minimum unit price was passed on 9 August 2018, there have been delays to the introduction of MUP due to objections from Portugal, who argued it breached European free trade law by discriminating against imported alcohol products.

An awareness campaign, aimed at...

It is well recognised that substance use during pregnancy can harm the developing foetus, leading to potential cognitive dysfunction and mental and behavioural difficulties in later life.

Longitudinal studies, which track participants over an extended amount of time, allow researchers to examine specific factors that may influence the growth and development of an individual.

Despite the frequent co-occurrence of prenatal alcohol exposure and instances of childhood maltreatment, there has been little research investigating the complicated relationship between the factors and potential long...

Alcohol use continues to be one of the leading risk factors for the global burden of disease. This is despite growing awareness of the harm alcohol has the potential to cause and many worldwide initiatives and campaigns to tackle the issue.

Even though the global trend in alcohol use shows an overall increase, trends have varied in different parts of the world.

In an article published in the Lancet, scholars from around the world have gathered information about alcohol consumption in relation to gender, age, and geographical location from 2000 to 2016.

Results from their study found:

Alcohol-Related Deaths Increasing in the United States

Shared by Livia - 13 January 2020

News

There has been a steady rise in deaths caused by alcohol, according to a study by researchers at the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), part of the National Institutes of Health.

The research examined U.S. death certificate data from 1999 to 2017, classing deaths as alcohol-related if an alcohol-induced cause was listed as the underlying cause or as a contributing cause of death.

The team found that, in 2017, nearly half of alcohol-related deaths resulted from liver disease (31%; 22,245) or overdoses on alcohol alone or with other drugs (18%; 12,954).

Researchers have continuously debated the link between anxiety and alcohol use. However, despite the previous examination of the direction and strength of the association, the form of the relationship remains unclear.

A recent systematic review, published in the Journal of Addiction, has sought to uncover some of the unanswered questions about child and adolescent anxiety and later alcohol use outcomes.

All the articles used in the review were English language publications, used human participants. They examined anxiety exposure (predictor variable) in childhood or adolescence and alcohol...

WHO

The adverse impact of alcohol consumption include the negative consequences of drinking on individuals other than the drinkers themselves, including both health and social problems.  Alcohol’s harm to others (HTO) is an interactional occurrence at the level of individuals and their relationships and is determined from the perspective of those affected by the drinker rather than from the perspective of the drinker or the society. The major social relationships to drinkers involve four main sets of roles: family, friend, co-worker and stranger.

In 2011, WHO, the Thailand Health Promotion...
