Cross-tolerance occurs when tolerance to one drug reduces the body’s response to another, usually within the same class of substances (for example, alcohol and benzodiazepines). It can also occur across different substance classes, such as between alcohol and opioids. This means that individuals dependent on one substance may develop reduced sensitivity or faster dependence on another with similar effects.
