Abstract

Objective: To determine the relative risk (RR) and societal burden of injury related to alcohol-attributable intentional interpersonal violence (alcohol-attributable fraction or AAF), and the dose–response relationship, in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), where both the RR and AAF for violence-related injuries are believed to be particularly high.

Methods: A probability sample of 1 024 emergency department patients from 10 LAC countries who reported an intentional interpersonal violence–related injury (IVRI) was analyzed using case-crossover fractional polynomial analysis of...

Abstract

[ABSTRACT]. Objective: To analyze trends in mortality due to diseases and conditions fully attributable to alcohol in Brazil. Methods: This was an ecological time-series study. Proportional, specific, and age-standardized mortality rates between 2000 and 2013 that were due to underlying or contributing causes fully attributable to alcohol use were analyzed by sex, ethnicity/skin color, age group, and region of residence in the country. Data on deaths were obtained from the Brazilian Mortality Information System (SIM). Prais-Winsten regression was used to analyze trends. Results...

Abstract

Background

Alcohol presents risks to the health of older adults at levels that may have been ‘safer’ earlier in life. Moderate drinking is associated with some health benefits, and can play a positive role in older people’s social lives. To support healthy ageing, we must understand older people’s views with regards to their drinking. This study aims to synthesise qualitative evidence exploring the perceptions and experiences of alcohol use by adults aged 50 years and over.

Methods

A pre-specified search strategy was applied to Medline, PsychINFO, Scopus, Applied Social Sciences...

Baclofen as a Treatment for Alcohol Use Disorder

JOSE OSCAR TARAZONA LA TORRE - 25 January 2019

Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is a brain disorder associated with high rates of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Baclofen, a selective gamma-aminobutyric acid-B (GABAB) receptor agonist, has emerged as a promising drug for AUD. The use of this drug remains controversial, in part due to uncertainty regarding dosing and efficacy, alongside concerns about safety. The maintenance dose varies widely from 30 to more than 300 mg/day. Baclofen may be particularly advantageous in those with liver disease, due to its limited hepatic metabolism and safe profile in this population. Patients should be...

Irving A, Goodacre S, Blake J, et al Managing alcohol-related attendances in emergency care: can diversion to bespoke services lessen the burden? Emerg Med J 2018;35:79-82.

Abstract

Acute alcohol intoxication (AAI) has a long history of burdening emergency care services. Healthcare systems around the world have explored a variety of different services that divert AAI away from EDs to better manage their condition. Little formal evaluation has been undertaken, particularly in the UK where alcohol misuse is one of the highest in the world. In this article, we outline a brief history of diversionary services, introduce the concept of Alcohol Intoxication Management Services (AIMS) and describe examples of AIMS in the UK. We then describe Evaluating the Diversion of...

Alcohol y enfermedades cardiacas

Jose Luis Vazquez Martinez - 14 January 2019

Exercise role in the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders

Jose Luis Vazquez Martinez - 28 December 2018

Nowadays there is some evidence available that points out that physical activity/exercise can be beneficial in the treatment of alcohol use disorders (AUD) and its comorbidities, like anxiety and depression. This beneficial effect is very important to consider, particularly because current treatment options of AUD are effective for some but not all patients and many experience relapses.

On August 28, 2017, Mats Hallgren and a group of researchers published the article “More Reasons to Move: Excercise in the Treatment of Alcohol Use Disorders”. After reviewing the available evidence from...
