Beaufort en Vallée

Dima Rosins - 17 May 2025

Dr. Andrea Mohan

A new study from the University of Dundee and University of Stirling highlights the impact of placing specialist Addiction Nurses (ANs) within primary care teams to support individuals with serious alcohol problems in disadvantaged communities. Focusing on a service in Glasgow (PCANOS), the research shows how ANs deliver person-centred care through home visits, building trust and improving health outcomes.

Patients reported reduced alcohol use, better well-being, and stronger family relationships. The study emphasises the importance of expanding the role of ANs to reach underserved...

With the increased role of nurses in caring for patients with substance addiction, there was a clear need to develop the Addiction Nursing Competencies to guide and support the nursing workforce. A literature search revealed a lack of formal instruments to assess and guide nurses in caring for persons with substance use disorders. The Addiction Nursing Competencies were created using existing nursing education frameworks and addiction nurse care manager clinical guidelines.

Abstract:

While the traditional complications of diabetes mellitus—such as cardiovascular disease—are well recognized, advances in treatment and increased life expectancy have revealed a new set of lesser-known complications that are becoming more prominent.

As mortality from vascular disease declines, conditions like cancer and dementia have emerged as leading causes of death among people with diabetes in several countries. In addition, growing evidence shows strong associations between diabetes and a range of comorbidities, including:

Background
Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is important for helping nurses keep their skills and knowledge up to date. While it’s well known that CPD is essential, we know less about how nurses feel about it and what challenges or benefits they experience. This article brings together findings from several studies to better understand how nurses experience CPD. The goal is to help improve future CPD programmes by learning from different countries and settings.

Background
Smoking is one of the top causes of preventable death and is linked to many serious health problems, including cancer and chronic diseases. Nurses can play a big role in helping people quit smoking by offering support through counselling, education, and mental health care. These nurse-led programs have been shown to increase quit rates. Training nurses to deliver these programs is important, and reviewing past studies helps us understand what works best.

Methods
Researchers searched eight major health databases between March 27 and August 1, 2024, to find studies on nurse-led...

Adi Zuloff-Shani Ph.D. Psychedelics to the Rescue

Addiction and obesity share similar neurological pathways, both linked to compulsive behaviors and the brain's reward system. Research has highlighted the potential of GLP-1 receptor agonists, originally developed for diabetes, to help manage both appetite and addictive cravings. These medications, such as semaglutide, may regulate addictive behaviors by influencing reward circuits in the brain. However, they come with potential side effects, and their long-term effects are still under investigation.

In addition, a new compound, 5-Methoxy-2-aminoindane (MEAI), is being researched for its...
