Naloxone is a fast-acting opioid antagonist medication that reverses respiratory depression caused by opioid overdose. It binds to opioid receptors, blocking the effects of opioids like heroin, morphine, or fentanyl. Commonly known by the brand name Narcan, naloxone works within minutes but lasts only 20–40 minutes, making repeated doses and emergency medical care essential. It is safe, non-addictive, and has no effect on non-opioid overdoses.
