Capacity Building Workshop on Citizen-Generated Data in Sarawak, Malaysia

On 1–2 December 2025, ISSUP Malaysia participated in the Capacity Building Workshop on Citizen-Generated Data, organised by the Malaysia CSO–SDG Alliance (MCSA) in collaboration with the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) and hosted at SOSDA, Kuching.

The workshop aimed to strengthen civil society capacity in generating, managing, and using community-level data to support Malaysia’s SDG reporting efforts. Key sessions by DOSM covered the national SDG statistical framework, indicator availability, data gaps, and standard concepts and methodologies for improving data quality.

Representing ISSUP Malaysia, OAPTAR shared practical insights on low-cost data collection tools, community-based monitoring, and data from school, youth, and family programmes. These examples highlighted how CSO-generated evidence contributes to understanding mental health, prevention outcomes, and community wellbeing.

Participants expressed strong interest in developing standardised templates, improving data literacy, and strengthening DOSM–CSO collaboration to ensure community realities are better reflected in national statistics.

ISSUP Malaysia remains committed to supporting evidence-based practice and improving data capacity within the prevention and behavioural health ecosystem.
