Trauma-Informed Parenting: Connection Before Correction

ISSUP Malaysia, in collaboration with the Asian Recovery Network (ARN), and Serenity in the Steps successfully hosted a webinar entitled “Trauma-Informed Parenting: Connection Before Correction”, bringing together participants from diverse professional and community backgrounds to explore the importance of trauma-informed approaches in parenting and family support.

The webinar highlighted the growing evidence linking adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), trauma, mental health challenges, and substance use disorders. Discussions emphasized the importance of moving beyond punitive responses toward approaches grounded in safety, connection, emotional regulation, and compassionate understanding.

Participants were introduced to key concepts of trauma-informed care, including:

  • Creating safe physical and psychological environments
  • Building trust and connectedness within families
  • Supporting emotional regulation and resilience
  • Understanding behaviour through a trauma-informed lens

The session also encouraged participants to reflect deeply on how unresolved trauma may shape behaviours, relationships, and parenting patterns across generations.

The webinar generated strong engagement from participants, with active discussions on parenting challenges, emotional wellbeing, and the importance of strengthening families as part of broader prevention and recovery efforts.

ISSUP Malaysia , ARN and Serenity in the Steps remain committed to promoting evidence-informed, compassionate, and community-centered approaches that strengthen individuals, families, and communities across the region.
