ISSUP Sri Lanka, in collaboration with Mel Madura and Samutthãna, is organising a workshop led by Dr. Mahendra Perera.
This workshop will focus on the practical medical management of substance use disorders. It will review the principles of detoxification, including the assessment of patients and the identification of relevant medical and psychiatric co-morbid conditions.
The role of clinical investigations emphasising a pragmatic cost-benefit approach and consideration of the availability of investigations in different treatment settings, will be explored. The appropriate use of medications to manage withdrawal symptoms will also be reviewed, with particular attention to drugs that are commonly available in routine clinical practice.
The session will also highlight the importance of psychoeducation, engaging patients and significant others in treatment, and approaches to rehabilitation based on relapse-prevention principles, including the use of medications to reduce cravings and the importance of regular follow-up.
