Strengthening Community Leadership for Drug Prevention in Kudat, Sabah

The KUDAT CHAMPION programme was successfully conducted in Kudat, Sabah, bringing together community leaders, village representatives, recovery advocates, academic institutions, and drug prevention agencies in a collective effort to strengthen community-based prevention and recovery support.

The programme focused on empowering local leaders with greater awareness and understanding of substance use prevention, early intervention, treatment support, and the importance of reducing stigma towards individuals in recovery. Through interactive educational sessions and open discussions, participants explored the critical role communities play in creating safer, healthier, and more supportive environments.

A particularly meaningful aspect of the programme was the inclusion of individuals in recovery, whose participation helped promote empathy, social acceptance, and hope within the community. The event also featured a community declaration on drug prevention, symbolising a shared commitment towards building drug-free and resilient communities in Kudat.

The initiative reflects the growing importance of collaborative, community-driven approaches in addressing substance use issues in Sabah, where local leadership, recovery support, and community engagement remain essential pillars for sustainable prevention efforts.
