Codependence refers to a relationship pattern in which a person takes excessive responsibility for another’s behaviour, often helping them avoid facing the consequences of their actions in order to maintain stability or preserve the relationship. It is commonly seen among family members, partners, or close friends of individuals with substance use disorders.
The term can also describe an emotional or psychological overreliance on someone struggling with addiction or illness.
However, this term is sometimes viewed as stigmatising, as it may pathologise genuine concern and care.
