Community Engagement Programme on Health, Smoking, and Alcohol Education in Kudat, Sabah

ISSUP Malaysia is pleased to highlight a recent community engagement initiative carried out in Tambuluran Village, Kudat, Sabah, focusing on health, smoking, and alcohol education.

The programme was organised by Year 4 medical students from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) as part of their Community Medicine posting, in collaboration with the Rural Medical Education Centre (RMEC). It brought together healthcare professionals, students, and members of the local community in a shared effort to promote health awareness and preventive practices.

An ISSUP Malaysia board member, Dr. Mohd. Nazri contributed to the programme by delivering a health dialogue and supporting an educational booth on drug, alcohol, and smoking prevention. The initiative also featured a range of activities including health screenings, health education sessions, public health talks, and research poster presentations by the medical students.

The event was officiated by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Syed Sharizman bin Syed Abd Rahim, Deputy Dean (Research and Innovation), Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences, UMS, representing the Dean. It was also attended by the Kudat District Health Officer, the village head of Tambuluran, and other key stakeholders.

The programme received a positive response from the community, with villagers expressing interest in more health promotion and prevention initiatives in the future. This engagement highlights the importance of continued collaboration between academic institutions, healthcare professionals, and rural communities in strengthening public health and preventive care efforts.
