Empowering young people to take an active role in their communities was at the centre of discussions between Paraguay’s Minister of Youth, Salma Agüero, and representatives of ISSUP.
Bárbara Correa, ISSUP’s National Chapters Regional Coordinator for Latin America and Spain, and Francisco Javier Giménez Duarte, Director of ISSUP Paraguay, joined the Minister to discuss opportunities to support youth leadership in substance use prevention.
The discussion focused on equipping young people with knowledge and skills to lead community initiatives, encourage healthy lifestyles among their peers, and reduce their vulnerability to violence and recruitment into gangs or organised crime. Access to evidence-based knowledge and continued training were highlighted as essential foundations for this work.
It was agreed that a formal cooperation agreement would be signed between ISSUP Paraguay and the National Secretariat of Youth to advance these shared priorities.
Minister Agüero also presided over the closing ceremony of the youth training programme, where she committed to supporting the participants’ community projects, helping them put their learning into practice and contribute to the wellbeing of their communities.
