On 22nd October 2026 Uganda Youth Development Link (UYDEL), together with ISSUP Uganda, engaged students of social work, social sciences and related fields at Muteesa 1 Royal University-Masaka branch in a lecture connecting academic learning with practical youth crime prevention and social work. The lecture covered case management, relapse prevention, refusal skills and professional development.
Dr Rogers Kasirye, UYDEL’s Executive Director, discussed professional pathways and encouraged students to build their skills through internships, volunteering, research, networking and ethical practice. Ms Anna Nabulya, Deputy Executive Director, addressed case management, relapse prevention and refusal skills, emphasising assessment, shared support plans, referrals and follow-up.
Through the lecture, students were introduced to trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches, relapse warning signs and triggers, and ways to set boundaries and seek support. They explored how social workers can coordinate services and support young people through setbacks. Participants appreciated the practical engagement and requested a further visit, demonstrating interest in continued learning and professional exposure.
The lecture strengthened students’ preparation for supporting young people facing interconnected challenges, including violence, substance use and limited access to opportunities. By linking theory with prevention and coordinated care, it highlighted how future social workers can respond respectfully, promote resilience and connect young people with appropriate services.
