Connect & Protect Networking Event on Adolescent Substance Use Prevention in Vietnam
On December 14, 2024, WeCare Social Enterprise — under the framework of the Connect & Protect Network on Substance Abuse Prevention among Youth in Vietnam, funded by the Equity Initiative — organized a networking and dialogue event in Hanoi to discuss the current situation of substance use among adolescents in Vietnam. The event served as an opportunity for professionals, researchers, and community practitioners to exchange insights and strengthen collaboration in the field of substance use prevention.
Opening Remarks and Guest Representatives
The event opened with remarks from Mr. Mai Quang Anh, M.Sc., Director of WeCare Social Enterprise; Mr. Nguyen Quoc Thanh, Director of Nha San Collective; and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi Thai Lan, Lecturer in Sociology at the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi. The three speakers represented the Alumni Group of the Equity Initiative, underscoring the value of interdisciplinary collaboration in addressing public health and youth-related challenges.
Expert Presentations and Discussion
The session featured presentations from key experts and practitioners:
- Ms. Phan Thi Hoai Yen, Lecturer and Clinical Psychologist, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Ho Chi Minh City (UMP);
- Mr. Nguyen Cong Thanh, Research Assistant, Center for Training and Research on Substance Abuse and HIV (CREATA-H), Hanoi Medical University;

Speakers shared updates and reflections on critical topics including the science of addiction, psychological treatment for young clients with substance use problems, and an overview of recent research and literature in the field. The discussions emphasized the growing concern of adolescent substance use in Vietnam and the urgent need for multi-sectoral cooperation, early intervention, and evidence-based approaches.
ISSUP: A Hub for Scientific Knowledge and Professional Development
During the event, Mr. Mai Quang Anh also introduced the International Society of Substance Use Professionals (ISSUP) — a global platform that connects experts, organizations, and learners in substance use prevention, treatment, and recovery. He highlighted ISSUP’s role as a scientific information hub offering a comprehensive online library, e-learning modules, webinars, and certification opportunities.
Participants were encouraged to explore ISSUP to access scientific resources on addiction, join global discussions, and register for membership to enhance professional competencies. Mr. Quang Anh emphasized that such platforms are essential for building a well-informed community of young professionals and for advancing evidence-based practices in Vietnam.
Concluding Reflections
The networking event concluded with a sense of shared purpose and commitment among participants. Beyond gaining updated knowledge and diverse perspectives, attendees had the opportunity to connect with peers and institutions working toward the same goal — preventing substance use and supporting healthy development among Vietnamese youth.
Through the Connect & Protect Network, WeCare Social Enterprise aims to continue facilitating collaboration, learning, and advocacy to promote a healthy, resilient, and informed generation of young people in Vietnam.
