As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community-based prevention in Malaysia, an engagement session was conducted with the Tagal communities in Lawas, Sarawak, bringing together leaders and members from three villages.
This introductory meeting focused on initiating dialogue and building trust as the foundation for a Family Program. Rather than introducing a fixed intervention, the approach emphasised community ownership, cultural sensitivity, and co-creation.
The response from the community was highly encouraging. Participants demonstrated strong commitment through their punctual attendance, active participation, and the warm welcome extended to the visiting team. The atmosphere of openness enabled meaningful two-way communication, allowing both facilitators and community members to exchange perspectives and build mutual understanding.
A key outcome was the shared recognition that the Family Program should be shaped by the community, rather than delivered to them. This sense of ownership is critical for sustainability and effectiveness, particularly in addressing complex challenges such as substance use and its wider social impact.
The engagement also highlighted the importance of community readiness. The Tagal communities demonstrated a strong willingness to engage, providing a solid foundation for the next phase of programme co-development and implementation.
This experience reinforces that prevention efforts are most effective when they begin with trust, respect, and genuine partnership.
“When communities are approached with respect and genuine partnership, they are not only willing to engage — they are ready to lead.”
