Advancing Professionalism in SUD Treatment in Tanzania: My ICAP I Credentialing Journey

I am honored and grateful to share that I have successfully earned the ICAP I – Treatment Credential (International Certified Addiction Professional – Treatment) through the International Consortium of Universities for Drug Demand Reduction (ICUDDR) Center for Credentialing & Accreditation.

This achievement marks an important milestone in my professional journey as a Substance Use Disorder Counsellor and addiction treatment practitioner in Tanzania. I extend my sincere appreciation to all mentors, trainers, colleagues, recovery professionals, and clients who continue to inspire and shape my work in the field of addiction treatment and recovery support.

As Tanzania continues to face growing challenges related to alcohol and drug use disorders, the need for professional, ethical, evidence-based, and compassionate treatment services has never been greater. Professional credentialing strengthens the quality of care we provide, promotes accountability, and ensures that individuals and families affected by addiction receive competent and dignified support.

I strongly believe that investing in professional development, certification, and continuous learning is essential for advancing the Substance Use Disorder workforce in Tanzania and across Africa. Through collaboration, education, and adherence to international standards, we can build stronger recovery-oriented systems of care and improve treatment outcomes within our communities.

I encourage fellow professionals, students, and organizations working in prevention, treatment, recovery, and mental health to continue pursuing capacity building and international standards of practice in order to elevate our field and better serve those in need.
