BUILDING YOUR SELFCARE AS A RECOVERY PROFESSIONAL

Sammy Ombisa Recovery Month 2026 Mombasa Kenya

September is Recovery Month and a reminder that Recovery work starts with self-preservation. It is a time when we rightfully celebrate the expansion of services, peer workforce development, and advocacy wins, and the “Recovery is possible" slogan.

As we celebrate Recovery Month, our field shines a spotlight on expanding services, increasing awareness of Recovery services, protecting rights for those in Recovery and their families, increasing the number of professionals in the Recovery space through training, and strengthening the peer workforce. Yet amid this vital advocacy, one element often goes unspoken: the sustainability of the professionals doing the work.

Recovery professionals carry unique emotional loads, yet there’s an unspoken paradox in our field: the same professionals who teach sustainable recovery may often struggle to sustain themselves. To show up with commitment, professional demeanour, and genuine love for those we serve, we must balance immediate coping skills with long-term structural habits that promote wellbeing.

To build a stronger advocacy movement and network, we must start with the individual Recovery advocate.

Whether it is Recovery Month such as this September or just another workday, sustainable Recovery work requires the daily reset as the micro strategies, such as one small win documented daily, and the macro: weekly personal self-care such as strict sleep boundaries. Remember, you can’t pour from an empty cup. Protect your energy; protect the movement to keep the network stronger.
