Deflection and Cross-Sector Collaboration

ABSTRACT

Jac Charlier will explore deflection as a collaborative approach to addressing substance use, highlighting how communities can connect individuals with appropriate health, treatment, recovery, and social support services while reducing unnecessary involvement with the criminal justice system. The presentation will emphasize the importance of cross-sector collaboration among law enforcement, the substance use prevention, treatment and recovery workforce, drug control authorities, public health, and community-based organizations. By working across traditional sector boundaries, deflection initiatives can strengthen referral pathways, improve access to care, and promote more coordinated, person-centered responses to substance use and related challenges.
