ADHD and SUD: Treatment Discontinuation and Reinitiation

A 2026 Swedish register-based study examined the continuity of pharmacological treatment for ADHD among individuals with and without substance use disorders (SUD).

Within one year, 44% of individuals with ADHD and SUD discontinued medication treatment, compared with 25% of those with ADHD without SUD.

Individuals with ADHD and SUD also had a lower rate of treatment reinitiation.

These findings highlight the importance of looking beyond treatment initiation and better understanding the challenges of maintaining ADHD pharmacological treatment among people with co-occurring SUD.
