Biphasic Effect of Alcohol

This refers to the biphasic response the body experiences during alcohol consumption. Initially, alcohol produces stimulating or positive effects, such as increased energy or euphoria. However, with continued drinking, these effects shift to depressant or negative effects, including sedation and impaired coordination. Research shows a point of diminishing returns—typically at a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of around 0.05–0.06%—beyond which further drinking increases adverse outcomes rather than pleasure. This understanding challenges the common belief that greater alcohol intake leads to greater enjoyment.
