Contingency Management

Contingency Management (CM) is a behavioural intervention based on the principle of operant conditioning, which states that behaviour is shaped by its consequences. It uses motivational incentives or rewards to reinforce positive behaviours such as abstinence from substance use or adherence to treatment plans.

In CM programs, rewards or consequences are provided promptly and consistently in response to measurable behaviours, such as negative drug test results. The approach aims to encourage healthy, drug-free lifestyles and improve treatment outcomes.

Effective implementation requires clear goals, collaboration with participants, and timely reinforcement. Challenges can include concerns about sustainability, perceived fairness, and adaptation outside of specific healthcare systems.
