Brian Maila

Brian Maila, BScHB, MBChB, MMED (Psychiatry), MSc (Addiction Studies), is a psychiatrist and PhD student in the SDSU–UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Interdisciplinary Research on Substance Use.

His research focuses on substance-related outcomes in healthcare, including overdose prevention, addiction treatment, harm reduction, and the influence of mental disorders, HIV, and social determinants of health. He completed medical and psychiatric training at the University of Zambia and holds a Master’s in Addiction Studies from a joint program by Virginia Commonwealth University, King’s College London, and the University of Adelaide. He has served as a psychiatrist in Zambia’s Ministry of Health, including leadership in addiction services. He has received fellowships including the Hubert H. Humphrey Fellowship, the Rotary Foundation International Scholar Award, and the T32 Predoctoral Fellowship at UC San Diego.
