Professor Dr. Harry Sumnall

Dr. Harry Sumnall is a Professor in Substance Use at the Public Health Institute, Liverpool John Moores University, UK.

His Ph.D. examined the behavioral pharmacology of MDMA, but his professional career has covered a diverse range of interests related to substance use, particularly around drug policy, evidence and guidelines, and the development and evaluation of interventions designed to reduce drug related harms.

Professor Sumnall’s funded research programmes have examined the evidence base for substance misuse prevention and the mechanisms for implementing evidence based practice and policy.

He maintains a keen interest in developments in psychedelic science, particularly around policy, education, and media and communications.

Professor Sumnall’s professional associations include:

  • Member of the UK Government Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs 2011-2019
  • Board Member and Past-President of the European Society for Prevention Research 2010-2019
  • Scientific Advisor to the MIND Foundation
  • Consultant for the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA)
