Description

This presentation will address components of tobacco use and treatment for the pregnant and postpartum population. The first segment will include an overview of the latest research on tobacco use within the pregnant population and the negative impact of tobacco use on specific social and racial groups. The second section will describe an evidenced-based, prenatal postpartum program that has shown positive results within 22 states by reducing tobacco use during and after pregnancy, especially within the low socioeconomic population. The third section will describe how the successful initiative transitioned to telehealth during COVID and its positive impact on health equity for this population.

Learning Objectives

  • Participants will be able to list three reasons why treating tobacco use within low socioeconomic pregnant populations improves birth outcomes and reduces healthcare costs.
  • Participants will be able to describe the three-step approach to an evidenced-based telehealth cessation program for the pregnant population, especially for the low scioeconomic population.
  • Participants will be able to list states which have implemented an evidenced-based pregnancy tobacco cessation program and secured funds, even during COVID.
