Description
The addiction profession has made incredible progress in adopting harm reduction strategies as clinical intervention tools for persons with substance use disorders. Many patients in a harm reduction clinical pathway will often express no need or no desire for counseling. Unfortunately in this scenario, the clinical interventions that are most effective for a patient who does not believe they need treatment are not used. Counselors simply stop and feel ambivalent about "pressuring a patient" into counseling that they express they are not in need of. In this presentation, participants will review which clinical interventions most effective for people who express they do not want or do not need counseling.

Christine S. Martin, MA, LMFT, LACS, CS, is an addiction professional from Charleston, South Carolina. For the last 16 years, she has been working in the field of opioid treatment. Martin currently works as the National Clinical Director – Central Division for Behavioral Health Group, overseeing the quality of clinical work in 14 OTPs across five states. She previously worked as a program surveyor for CARF. Martin represents South Carolina on the Board of AATOD, the American Association for the Treatment of Opioid Dependence, and is the president of the South Carolina chapter. She serves on the board of Faces and Voices of Recovery Lowcountry, a local recovery community organization. Martin is a passionate advocate for individuals and families in and seeking recovery and a believer in the value of evidence-based practices, MAT, harm reduction, and supporting multiple pathways to recovery.
