Chronic restriction of sleep hours is a risk factor for developing cardiovascular, metabolic and psychiatric disorders. Several studies have shown that the chronic reduction of sleep time favors the relapse of patients addicted to substances. In animal models, both sleep restriction and deprivation are reported to increase self-administration of methylphenidate and cocaine.
