The Department

The Institute for Medical Humanities and Department of Sociology at Durham University seek to appoint a talented researcher and scholar to the role of Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on The Practice Site, part of the Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities (DRP-MH). We welcome applications from those with research interests in the broad field of the Social Sciences and we are particularly eager to hear from applicants with expertise in health inequalities in areas of socioeconomic deprivation and marginalisation, substance use and addiction, and/or the medicalisation of distress.

This post is part of an exciting expansion of medical humanities at Durham funded by the Wellcome Trust. The Discovery Research Platform for Medical Humanities (DRP-MH) at Durham University aims to empower health and wellbeing researchers from different sectors and disciplines to co-develop new and experimental approaches to tackling health challenges, including those arising at the intersections of mental health and health inequalities. The Platform will create space for experimentation and intellectual risk-taking, support networks globally, and revolutionize the research capacity of the field of Medical Humanities. It will enable large-scale collaborations with community, creative, health and voluntary sector organisations, and involve over 200,000 global academics and lived experience researchers through international partnerships with leading Universities in the USA, Sweden, the Netherlands, South Africa and China. Platform researchers come from a wide range of disciplines including Literary Studies, Psychology, Philosophy, History, Sport and Exercise Science, Education and Sociology. The DRP-MH supports the Institute’s vision to improve human health through research on hidden experience.

Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate in the Social Sciences with a particular emphasis on experiences of health and illness in marginalised and/or socioeconomically deprived communities The post holder will be responsible for designing and conducting research as part of The Practice, one of three collaborative Sites hosted by the Platform.  The Practice is a partnership with St Anthony’s Health Centre, a GP practice based in Walker, Newcastle Upon Tyne.  The Practice will develop new insights into intractable questions around health inequalities, mental health, and the treatment of complex multimorbidities. The postholder will work closely with Site leads Dr. Jesse Proudfoot and Dr. Jonathan Coates (a GP at St. Anthony’s Health Centre and In-Practice Fellow at the IMH) to design and conduct new research at The Practice, facilitate new projects from other Platform team members for the site, and support collaborations with other researchers and stakeholders. Practice site activities may include but are not limited to regular participation in Site meetings, workshops and other events; collaboration in methodological innovation with interdisciplinary and cross-sector partners through a range of modalities; the design and delivery of pilot and proof-of-concept studies; and taking shared responsibility for sustaining a flourishing research culture in the Site and Platform more broadly. The post holder will also be expected and supported to collaborate with other Sites and Researchers across the Platform. Regular participation (in-person as well as virtual) at Site, Lab and Platform activities, as agreed with the Line Manager is essential.

The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is seeking an innovative leader to serve in the dual position as the Director of the trans-NIH HEAL (Helping to End Addiction Long-Term) Initiative: Native Collective Research Effort to Enhance Wellness (N CREW) Program and as Associate Director for Tribal Affairs. The position is in the Division of Epidemiology, Services and Prevention Research (DESPR) for supervision, located in Rockville, MD, and reports directly to the NIDA Director for the Associate Director component.

NIDA's mission is to lead the nation in bringing the power of science to bear on drug misuse and addiction. This charge has two critical components. The first is the strategic support and conduct of research across a broad range of disciplines. The second is ensuring the rapid and effective dissemination of research results to improve practice and inform policy related to drug misuse and addiction. 

The N CREW Program is NIH’s largest planned investment in Tribal and American Indian/Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian (AI/AN/NH) community research to date, funded through the HEAL Initiative ($291 million over 7 years, 20 planned Other Transaction Authority (OTA) awards, and use of other mechanisms to attain Program goals). This initiative bolsters research across NIH to improve prevention and treatment for opioid misuse and addiction, and pain management, including understanding and treating pain.  The N Crew Program supports Tribes and Native American Serving Organizations (T/NASOs) to conduct locally prioritized research to address overdose, substance use, and pain, including related factors such as mental health and wellness. N CREW will have a wide-ranging impact, setting a precedent for programs across NIH.
The N CREW Program Director provides scientific leadership, policy interpretation, and direction for the highly complex, trans-NIH, public-facing N CREW Program, including planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of progress and impact.

The incumbent will articulate on behalf of NIDA and participating Institutes/Centers (ICs) the scientific priorities and also engagement strategies and policy application within this sphere. This position requires representation on the federal side by an appropriately senior official who possesses a deep and specific understanding of Tribal sovereignty, relevant policies, memoranda, and AI/AN/NH community preferences, as well as someone who has the credibility and earned trust of the community combined with a deep understanding of NIH policies and processes.

The incumbent will also serve as senior advisor to the NIDA Director as the NIDA Associate Director for Tribal Affairs. The Associate Director provides leadership and direction on all facets of AI/AN/NH drug addiction research to lead and integrate this work across NIDA as well as across NIH, including the NIH OD Tribal Health Research Office (THRO), other federal agencies, AI/AN constituent national and international organizations, AI/AN extramural researchers, T/NASOs, all of which have vested interests and strong voices in engaging with the NIH. The N CREW Director and Associate Director for Tribal Affairs dual position include inextricably intertwined and unique components and constituencies that must be integrated and aligned, increasing the complexity and impact of the position beyond standard single funding program positions in this crucial area for NIDA and NIH.

The EMCDDA is one of the European Union’s decentralised agencies. Established in 1993 and based in Lisbon, it is the central source of comprehensive information on drugs and drug addiction in Europe. On 2 July 2024, the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) will become the European Union Drugs Agency (EUDA).

The position we are recruiting for is currently situated within the Scientific Coordination Unit, and the selected candidate will report to the Scientific Director and work closely with the scientific coordination team. The job holder will be responsible for supporting the Scientific Director in his work aimed at developing cooperation and technical activities with the scientific community and external stakeholders. This includes the preparation of technical and scientific meetings, events and conferences; preparation and implementation of contracts for scientific activities; contributing to the preparation of technical reports and other technical documents aimed at facilitating cooperation between the agency and scientists, researchers and other external stakeholders; and providing support to the various scientific processes that are required for the team to successfully fulfil its responsibilities. The job holder, with the guidance of the Scientific Director and the support of the other team members, will also be responsible for various organisational and technical tasks related to the Lisbon Addictions Conference, including assisting with the development of the scientific programme. The Mental Health and Addiction Research Group within the Department of Health Sciences is looking to appoint a Research Associate with experience in quantitative or mixed methods research, and an interest and relevant experience in research on tobacco and/or mental health.

You will be part of the NIHR-funded SCIMITAR-South Asia (SA) Global Health Research Programme, which aims to implement and evaluate a behavioural intervention (SCIMITAR-SA) for tobacco cessation in Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. The SCIMITAR-SA intervention is targeted at individuals with serious mental illnesses and aims to reduce the risk of multiple long-term conditions (MLTCs) in these populations by reducing tobacco use. You will work with the chief investigator, Professor Simon Gilbody, and the deputy lead, Faraz Siddiqui as part of a wider multidisciplinary team. The role will be line managed by Faraz Siddiqui.

You will have knowledge and experience in the conduct of multicentre (and preferably, multi-country) trials, and hold a PhD or equivalent experience in applied health research or a related discipline. You will work with the SCIMITAR-SA research team across the adaptation, implementation, and evaluation work packages. You will support the adaptation of the existing SCIMITAR-SA materials, design and delivery of the feasibility and effectiveness trials, and contribute to programme reports and academic outputs. The post will be based at the University of York, and there will be opportunities to travel internationally for purposes of trial monitoring & coordination, and dissemination.

The Research Specialist I will be responsible for assisting with studies as detailed below. The Research Specialist I may collaborate with other members of the research team, faculty, and staff of the Behavioral Health Equity Program, but will also be expected to take initiative and work well independently. Due to the time- or deadline-sensitive nature of many projects, the pace of work may be demanding at times. Other projects are long-term and require constant attention to prioritization.

This is a mentored position that offers valuable research experience in clinical psychology, health disparities, and public mental health research. It is an ideal position for people looking to apply to graduate or medical school. As a mentored position, the successful candidate will enjoy faculty and departmental support preparing graduate school applications and have the opportunity to strengthen those applications through co-authorships and conference presentations of scholarly research.

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with Dr. Abby Batchelder across one or two clinical trials. The Research Specialist I will also be responsible for various administrative tasks in the Behavioral Health Equity Program. These may include corresponding with the IRB and study sponsors, ordering office supplies, managing office space, coordinating meetings, coordinating updates to the teams website, and handling PIs expenses.

Ideal applicants will demonstrate, preferably through prior research experience, a strong interest in pursuing clinical psychology, social work, public health/epidemiology, medical, or related research. Applicants with an interest in HIV, mental health interventions, substance use, health psychology, public health, and health disparities are strongly encouraged to apply. The applicant should be comfortable working with diverse issues related to sexuality, chronic illness, gender, substance use, and mental health.

This position will take place in a hybrid setting the Research Specialist I will be expected to work in person up to 80% of the time (4/5 days a week). Ideal applicants will be comfortable working in both remote and in-person environments.

The Research Specialist I will also be responsible for study recruitment and enrollment. This will consist of traveling to recruitment sites in the community, meeting with potential study participants to share information about the studies and conduct screening and enrollment procedures.

The Research Specialist I will be responsible for study regulatory tasks. They will create, submit, and maintain ethics applications, amendments, continuing reviews, and materials for a variety of domestic and international ethics committees. They will also adhere strictly to all Institutional Review Board (IRB) guidelines and confidentiality requirements, and monitor and evaluate protocol compliance.

Data analysis and data entry: Responsible for organizing, cleaning, and preparing data and data collection systems. The Research Specialist I will also perform data entry and quality control procedures. Additionally, the Research Specialist I will participate in qualitative data analysis using NVivo or Dedoose and quantitative data analysis using SPSS.

Responsible for study-related administrative tasks: Ordering office supplies, managing office space, coordinating meetings, coordinating updates to the study team website, handling Principal Investigator's expenses.

Assist the Principal Investigator with compiling grant application support documents, including biographical sketches, CVs, and Letters of Support. The Research Specialist I may also help edit and format administrative components of grant applications.

OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME

The objectives of the Programme on Mental Health and Substance Use Disorders (MNS) in EMRO are to guide Member States in the development, adaptation and implementation of evidence-informed policies, plans, legislations and interventions aimed at the promotion of mental health and prevention of mental, neurological and substance use disorders, delivery of services based on best practices and standards of care and promoting recovery, and observance of human rights in an inter and multi-sectoral milieu.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The incumbent will be responsible for the following duties: Assess the current regional situation of substance use and substance use disorders and develop a strategic approach to assist Member States in prevention and treatment for substance use disorders in line with the regional framework to strengthen public health action on the problem of substance use. Enhance the capacities of Member States to develop and implement-evidence informed policies and legislations and strengthen the health systems response to public health problems related to substance use. Provide technical support and advice to Member States in developing national strategies and action plans on reducing health consequences of substance use, scaling up evidence-based interventions for the prevention of substance use disorders, and provision of quality services to people with substance use disorders across the continuum of care. Plan, develop, implement and monitor building capacity activities at country and regional levels to respond to public health problems attributable to substance use and substance use disorders. Support Member States in the development of surveillance and monitoring systems for substance use. Provide technical support and advice to civil society organizations and other entities, as appropriate, on the issues related to reduction of the public health problems associated with substance use. Foster collaboration and partnerships with other EMRO programmes and initiatives in the area of substance use and public health. Prepare and revise technical documents, briefing notes, meeting reports, information products and content of EMRO website related to work under the incumbent's responsibility, as appropriate.

Responsibilities:

Within assigned authority, the incumbent will be responsible for the following specific duties:

  • Act as programme officer of the GRIDS programme, liaising with relevant national, regional and international stakeholders and counterparts involved in the programme, ensuring the smooth flow of information and communication, and ensuring the successful completion of all activities of the work programme in the country/region.
  • Carry out the implementation of INCB strategies, policies and activities related to the implementation of article 12, 13 and related articles of the 1988 Convention against Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances and relevant drug control articles and resolutions; assist in the organization and delivery of a variety of services aimed at adequate government implementation of the drug control Conventions.
  • Organize, coordinate the preparation of, and participate in, training missions, case meetings, conferences and meetings, industry and officer twinning activities, and contribute to the drafting of documents for INCB.
  • Organize and/or participate in field missions, including proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, and providing guidance to external consultants, government officials, private sector companies and other parties.
  • Contribute to the promotion of and support the voluntary public partnership process with governments and relevant private sector companies; liais with officers from member states to identify and invite private sector companies from their countries to participate in working groups and related meetings.
  • Facilitate private sector engagement that supports companies’ participation in related events such as working group meetings, training and twinning events, workshops, conferences and related expert consultations.
  • Monitor and analyse developments and trends in drug, new psychoactive substance, precursors, dangerous substances and illicit manufacturing equipment at the national, regional and global level.
  • Monitor and review best practices, methodologies and programmes in drug and precursors control and contribute to their promotion among Member States; provide explanations/support/training to governments on provisions of the drug control Conventions.
  • Draft a variety of written outputs, such as background documents, strategic and operational threat assessments, needs assessments, correspondence with governments, presentations and training materials.
  • Contribute to the development, management, use and promotion of proprietary INCB communication platforms (IONICS, PICS, PEN) with information on various aspects of drug, new psychoactive substances, precursors, dangerous substances and their illicit manufacturing equipment.
  • Guide support staff members, consultants and associate experts in their work.

The Organisation

The National Centre for Clinical Research on Emerging Drugs (NCCRED) is a national research centre that seeks to embed research in clinical practice. It aims to support clinicians to detect and respond to new drug health problems by building clinical research capacity and rapidly translating findings into clinical practice. The Centre supports a national Prompt Response Network (PRN) which allows for rapid, flexible, and collaborative responses to emerging substances that may cause prevalent, persistent, and harmful health and community impacts. The PRN has been co-designed with the community to ensure a high level of community impact and relevance.

The Centre is made up of a consortium of the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (NDARC), acting as lead agency, St Vincent’s Health Australia (SVHA), National Drug Research Institute (NDRI) – Curtin University of Technology, and the National Centre for Education and Training on Addiction (NCETA) – Flinders University.

  • Engage with SDS implementing countries in the region to promote and implement the guidance presented in the Synthetic Drug Strategy and maximize the utility of the UN Toolkit on Synthetic Drugs.
  • Work with countries in their respective regions to develop, articulate and implement national synthetic drug strategies that are modelled after the UNODC Synthetic Drug Strategy, encouraging comprehensive approach involving whole of government coordination and maximize the utility and knowledge of the UN Toolkit on Synthetic Drugs.
  • Coordinate and represent UNODC Synthetic Drug Strategy field level activity on synthetic drugs within UNODC and across various partner UN agencies and regional bodies as the African Union (AU), Organization of American States/Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (OAS/CICAD), Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), etc, ensuring coordination at the regional level.
  • Act as field level focal points for the Synthetic Drug Strategy responsible for regular briefings to donor community and enhance direct reporting on impact. • Work hand in hand with policymakers to ensure adoption of national legislation that is supportive of effective comprehensive responses to the synthetic drug problem.
  • Work with assigned countries in the respective region to identify tailored and measurable national action plans on synthetic drugs, guided by the framework of the UNODC Synthetic Drug Strategy.
  • Produce semi annual situation analysis and implementation reports on related UNODC and other implicated agencies’ related activities in the region.
  • Research, analyze and present information gathered from diverse sources. Organize and prepare written outputs, e.g. draft background papers, analysis, sections of reports and studies, inputs to publications, etc.
  • Provide substantive backstopping to consultative and other meetings, conferences, etc., to include proposing agenda topics, identifying participants, preparation of documents and presentations, etc.
  • Initiate and coordinate outreach activities; conduct training workshops, seminars, etc.; make presentations on assigned topics/activities.
  • As required, guide and coordinate the work of other professional and support staff members, mentor and guide consultants, interns and Associate Experts in their work.
  • Support and participate in field missions, including provision of guidance to external consultants, government officials and other parties and drafting mission summaries, etc.

Postdoctoral Position in support of Research to Develop an Integrative Framework for Addressing Gambling Among College Athletes

The Center for Gambling Studies (CGS) at the Rutgers School of Social Work (SSW) is seeking a postdoctoral scholar interested in gaining further experience in gambling or behavioral addictions research. This position is funded by the New Brunswick Chancellor Strategic Initiatives Funding, and will report to and receive mentorship from Dr. Lia Nower, Distinguished Professor and Director of the CGS.

The CGS is a research, policy and training center located at Rutgers SSW, a well-funded school with a portfolio that exceeds 50 million dollars. Rutgers SSW, is ranked #16 among MSW programs in the nation, and is among the largest and most diverse social work programs in the United States, offering BASW, MSW, DSW, and Ph.D. degrees to over 2,000 diverse students across three campuses in Camden (Philadelphia metropolitan area), Newark (New York metropolitan area), and New Brunswick, the flagship campus.
The postdoc will join the team at the CGS and assist with all tasks associated with developing an integrative university framework to educate on, identify, and address gambling, problem gambling, and related disorders among student athletes. The scholar will contribute to and assist with all aspects of research, including conducting an environmental scan and needs assessments, running focus groups, developing online tutorials, overseeing the collection of data, planning and carrying out quantitative and qualitative analyses, presenting results at research conferences, and preparing manuscripts for publication. In addition, the scholar will contribute to and gain experience in translating our framework to other university environments.

The postdoc will receive various career development opportunities including but not limited to submission of peer-reviewed articles and grants, expertise in qualitative and quantitative analysis, working across interactive gaming modalities and research areas, and training on dissemination and translation of findings to diverse audiences including scholars, university stakeholders, and athletes, coaches and students domestically and internationally.

The position we are recruiting for is currently situated within the Risks to Public Safety and Security unit, and the selected candidate will be reporting to the Head of the Risks to Public Safety and Security Unit. The job holder will be the senior technical expert in the competence centre established to support the network of forensic and toxicological laboratories active in investigations of drugs and drug-related harms. They will be responsible for leading the EMCDDA/EUDA actions that support and strengthen national and EU-level preparedness and responses to cross-border security and public health threats related to drugs, new psychoactive substances and precursors.
 

The successful applicant will be requested to perform the following main tasks and responsibilities:

  • provide technical expertise related to the forensic analysis of drug-related samples, including bulk samples and body fluids;
  • support data collection and information exchange with EUDA’s stakeholders, including EU institutions, Reitox national focal points and other relevant partners;
  • manage the exchange of information and data on new developments and trends generated by the network, to advise and respond to queries and technical requests from a range of stakeholders, including from EU institutions, Reitox national focal points and other relevant partners;
