Kuching, Sarawak – July 2025
In response to the growing need for mental health support in schools, OAPTAR and ISSUP Malaysia in collaboration with the Sarawak State Health Department and the District Education Office, conducted a two-day capacity-building workshop titled “Strengthening Mental Health Support Skills for Teachers and Counsellors."
This interactive workshop brought together teachers and school counsellors from Bau District to deepen their understanding of mental health, strengthen early identification and intervention skills, and explore strategies for referral and support. Key modules included identifying signs of depression, anxiety, and stress in adolescents, understanding ADHD and learning difficulties, and responding with empathy and professional care.
The workshop used evidence-based tools, practical role-plays, and peer learning to build participants’ confidence and capacity to be mental health allies in their schools. Participants also explored the critical connection between emotional well-being and learning outcomes, reinforcing the role of schools as nurturing and supportive environments for young minds.
This initiative is part of the broader Wellness Champion Program under OAPTAR and ISSUP Malaysia, with the goal of promoting mental health literacy, building resilience, and supporting school-based prevention of substance use and other risky behaviors.
