Job Title: Instructional Designer 

Location: Remote, applicants must be based within UTC to UTC+3 time zones 

Hours:  Full time 

Salary:  £25,000 - £40,000 per annum*, full-time equivalent pro-rated to reflect number of working hours, dependent upon experience and location. *Based upon UK based salary – will be adjusted based upon location. 

Contract: UK-based appointments are offered on a permanent contract. Appointments outside the UK are engaged as consultancy roles on renewable 12-month contracts, in line with funding and employment arrangements.

Role Summary: ISSUP is developing a global learning platform for the substance use workforce, ISSUP Academy. 

We are looking for an Instructional Designer who can design and build engaging online courses in Moodle Workplace. The successful candidate will work with subject matter experts and the ISSUP Training Team to convert existing training materials into high-quality online learning, using different tools to create interactive and accessible learning experiences for a global audience. 

Reporting to: Training Team Coordinator 
 

Key Responsibilities: 

The instructional designer will:  

  • Design, build, test and improve ISSUP Academy courses on Moodle Workplace. 
  • Convert existing PowerPoints, manuals, handouts and face-to-face training materials into engaging self-led, blended or facilitated online courses. 
  • Develop course outlines, storyboards, learning objectives, assessment plans and learner journeys. 
  • Create interactive learning activities using Moodle tools, including H5P, quizzes, forums, lessons, knowledge checks and reflection tasks. 
  • Build assessments that clearly measure whether learners have achieved the intended learning outcomes. 
  • Organise course content in a way that is clear, accessible, engaging and easy for learners to follow. 
  • Support basic Moodle Workplace administration, including course settings, enrolment options, completion tracking, learner access and basic reporting. 
  • Work with subject matter experts to translate technical content into clear, practical and learner-friendly materials. 
  • Apply accessibility, inclusion and multilingual learning principles to support a global audience. 
  • Help develop and update templates, guidance documents and course design standards to ensure consistency across ISSUP Academy. 
  • Support quality assurance by reviewing courses before launch and identifying improvements after learner feedback. 

 

Skills, Training and Experience Required 

The successful candidates should have:  

  • Strong experience in instructional design, adult learning and online course development. 
  • Proven experience building courses directly in Moodle or Moodle Workplace. 
  • Good working knowledge of Moodle activities, including quizzes, forums, lessons, completion tracking and H5P. 
  • Experience creating interactive learning activities and assessments for adult learners. 
  • Experience converting face-to-face training into self-led, blended or facilitated online formats. 
  • Strong writing, editing and content organisation skills. 
  • Ability to work with subject matter experts and turn technical content into clear learning materials. 
  • Understanding of accessibility, inclusive learning design and learner engagement. 
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to meet deadlines. 
  • Excellent attention to detail. 
  • Strong communication skills, especially when working with non-technical colleagues. 
  • Excellent English language skills, ideally native level or CEFR C2.  
  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally approximately 1–2 times per year, if required.  

Desirable experience:  

  • Experience in public health, substance use prevention, treatment, recovery, education or international development. 
  • Experience designing courses for global, multilingual or low-bandwidth audiences. 
  • Experience with Articulate Rise 360, Storyline, Canva, video scripting or AI video tools. 
  • Experience developing templates, course design guides or quality assurance checklists. 
  • Experience using learner feedback or LMS data to improve course design.
