Recovery Connections

Recovery Connections is a UK-based Lived Experience Recovery Organisation (LERO), a not-for-profit organisation that has developed a strong recovery community model beyond the treatment room. The work they do reflects a deeper understanding of recovery – one rooted in the spiritual beauty of recovery, manifested through belonging, connection, participation, and meaningful community life, where recovery is truly celebrated for the miracle that it is.

Driven by a spirit of recovery, the programme coaches, nurtures, trains, educates, inspires and empowers individuals and communities to achieve their full potential. Recovery Connections also provides therapeutic treatment support, residential rehabilitation , and practical solutions for people seeking recovery.

Recovery Connections operates a variety of recovery-oriented activities to strengthen recovery capital and social connections within the community. These include recovery cafés, recovery stands, peer-led groups, wellbeing programs, volunteering opportunities, community events, training programs and community engagement activities. Cafés and community hubs that are substance and alcohol-free create an informal, alcohol and substance-free space where people can connect, socialise, build friendships, and reconnect with life outside the treatment setting. They move recovery from the clinic to the community, where it truly belongs and thrives.

While the organisation supports individuals of all ages, it offers specific support for youth and adolescent recovery. Recognising that young adults are in a phase of self-discovery, connection-seeking, and socially influenced, recovery connections creates environments and opportunities for young people to experience recovery support that is relational, youth-friendly, flexible, and socially meaningful.

One of the more important areas of work is collegiate recovery. Collegiate recovery offers support systems embedded within colleges, universities, and training settings. The main objective is to help young people sustain recovery while remaining engaged in their education and recovery. Recovery support is integrated into the campus system and student life through peer support, sober spaces (substance-free environments within the campus such as dormitories, lounges and recreational centers), mentoring and recovery communities.

The contributions of recovery connections have shown that the community can move beyond simply service providers and can become the true anchors of recovery. By embedding recovery into the heart of the community, it takes on a life of its own and flourishes.

Recovery Connections showcases how recovery-oriented communities and recovery cities can be meaningful and impactful to the recovery community and support young people who need more than traditional recovery services.
