The first year after childbirth can be a particularly vulnerable time for women with opioid use disorder (OUD). During this period, the risk of overdose and other preventable health complications increases. At the same time, the postpartum period offers an important opportunity for healthcare providers, community organizations, families, and other support systems to connect mothers and infants with treatment, recovery support, and services that promote long-term health and well-being. A companion to SAMHSA’s recently released publication, Healthy Starts: Postpartum OUD Care Transitions for Mother and Infant, this webinar will equip providers, care teams, and other stakeholders with practical strategies to support coordinated postpartum care for mothers and families affected by OUD. Join this session to hear from nationally recognized leaders working at the forefront of maternal health, recovery support, and OUD care. Caitlin E. Martin, M.D., a physician-scientist and expert on treatment approaches for pregnant and parenting women with OUD, and Meghan Masterson, administrator of Vermont’s innovative Children and Recovering Mothers program, will share real-world strategies, promising practices, and lessons learned that are helping improve outcomes for mothers, infants, and families. Attendees will learn about: • Risk factors that affect women with OUD during the postpartum period and strategies that improve outcomes for mothers and infants. • The role of medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) in supporting recovery among pregnant and parenting women. • Coordinated care models that help pregnant and postpartum women access treatment, recovery support, and other essential services. • Community-based strategies that strengthen postpartum care and improve family outcomes. This webinar is sponsored by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).
