Strengthening Faith-Based Responses to Drugs and Youth Criminal Recruitment: CICAD's Experience in the Americas

ABSTRACT

This presentation examines the experience of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD) in strengthening the role of faith-based organizations in addressing substance use and the growing challenge of youth recruitment by organized criminal groups across the Americas. It highlights efforts to build the capacity of faith and community leaders through effective approaches to prevention, early intervention, treatment, recovery support, and community engagement. The presentation also explores CICAD’s regional strategy to strengthen faith-based networks, promote healthy youth development, enhance community resilience, and foster collaboration among governments, civil society, faith-based organizations, and international partners. Finally, it underscores the value of integrating scientific evidence, community engagement, and faith-based support to address complex social challenges and contribute to safer, healthier, and more resilient communities.
