What is the Purpose of Community Alcohol Partnerships?

Community Alcohol Partnerships (CAPs) are local initiatives which aim to reduce alcohol-related harm. They involve forming partnerships between the drinks industry and local governments with a particular focus on alcohol abuse and anti-social behaviour (ASB).

A new study, published in the Journal of Public Health, has considered the evidence on the effectiveness of CAPs in the UK. The investigation concluded that, despite industry claims, there is little existing evidence to suggest that CAPs are an effective way of reducing alcohol-related harm or ASB. Instead, it seems that CAPs, primarily, act as a corporate social responsibility measure intended to limit the “reputational damage associated with alcohol-related ASB.”
