On 26th November 2020, ISSUP Nigeria presented the Third Webinar in their Knowledge Update Series, focusing on the topic 'Drug Use / Addiction and the Family: Support Systems'.

  • Explain the interplay of biological and familial factors in drug abuse / addiction;

  • Highlight common challenges faced by families of persons with drug use and dysfunctional roles that family members assume;

  • Identify some evidence-based family approaches to drug abuse / addiction treatment

Dr. Gboyega E. Abikoye

Dr. Abikoye is a member of the Board of Trustees and the General Secretary of ISSUP Nigeria Chapter. He is also a Deputy Director at the Center for Research and Information on Substance Abuse (CRISA), Uyo, Nigeria. He received a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. Dr. Abikoye started his career as a clinical psychologist with the Dutch Section of Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF – Holland) from where he joined the University as a faculty member and rose through the ranks to become an Associate Professor at the University of Uyo in 2014. He was Head of Department of Psychology and Vice Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences at the University of Uyo. He was also Head of Department of Clinical Psychology at the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island. As a researcher, Dr. Abikoye has published widely on epidemiology and psychosocial underpinning of substance use, prevention and treatment of substance use disorders, psychopathology, and health-related quality of life.

Dr. Abikoye was a recipient of the Federal Government of Nigeria’s Postgraduate Scholarship Award (2001), the Postdoctoral Fellowship of the Northwest University, South Africa (2013), as well as research and travel grants from the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), National Institute for Drug Abuse (NIDA), Kettil Bruum Society (KBS), and Center for Population and Environmental Development (CPED). He was appointed into the National Technical Committee of the UNODC’s “Response to Drugs and Related Organized Crime in Nigeria” in 2014. He is a Fellow of both the Nigerian Psychological Association (NPA) and the Nigerian Association of Clinical Psychologists (NACP), and a Member of the Australian Center on Quality of Life (ACQoL). He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Nigerian Journal of Clinical Psychology, Regional Editor (West Africa) of the African Journal of Drug and Alcohol Studies, and a member of the editorial board of several other journals.
